BURNETT WOODS STATE NATURE PRESERVE

Located in an area of intense development in eastern Hendricks County, Burnett Woods was purchased by Central Indiana Land Trust as a bargain sale thanks to a gift from Ruth Burnett.

This 68-acre woods is dominated by tall black walnut, oak, hickory, maple, and tulip poplar trees. The forest floor and understory contain a rich mixture of native wildflowers and shrubs.

Burnett Woods has been dedicated as an Indiana State Nature Preserve. Burnett Woods has a marked nature trail available for passive recreation.

Directions to Burnett Woods Nature Preserve from US-36 in Avon:  Head South on Dan Jones Road (County Road 800 East).  At the roundabout at County Road 100 South, go 3/4 of the way around and head East on 100 South.  Parking is available at Light and Life Free Methodist Church, located just ahead.  Walk East from the church parking lot to the entrance of Burnett Woods, near 100 South.  Click here for an aerial map of the property.

Thank you for Helping Add 10 Acres to Burnett Woods!

Earlier this year, the Central Indiana Land Trust purchased a 10-acre inholding critical to Burnett Woods.  Protecting this "donut hole" and planting it to trees will enhance the preserve and may help attract wildlife species which require large tracts of contiguous forest.  A larger contiguous forest can provide essential habitat for birds that not only call central Indiana home, but also for those who stop here on their long migrations.  Box turtles will have more room to roam, and because this is a flatwoods, certain woodland frogs will have increased places in which to breed.  This tract of land was zoned R-5 by the town of Avon, which would have allowed for the highest density housing possible.

With your help, we have raised over $300,000 in project costs!  The addition was officially purchased in March 2010, and 4,400 tree seedlings were planted in May to reforest the former field.

In particular, we would like to thank the following donors:
The Conservation Fund's Rocky Express Migratory Bird Account
Indiana Heritage Trust
Duke Energy
Indiana Native Plant & Wildflower Society
Hendricks County Community Foundation

And many individual donors... thank you!
