BURR OAK BEND

Central Indiana Land Trust's second largest property is Burr Oak Bend, a 130-acre site that is a floodplain in a bend of the White River in Hamilton County.

The Land Trust acquired the first phase of Burr Oak Bend in August 2002. This 52-acre parcel was the first land acquisition to close as a result of the White River/Guide Settlement following the fish kill of December 1999.  It has been restored from an agricultural field to 31.5 acres of mixed hardwood forest and 12.5 acres of prairie.

The following acres have been added since then:

  • 2004: 68 acres in three different tracts, on both sides of the river
  • 2005: 8 acres on the east side of the river
  • 2009: a critical 2-acre inholding
Management

In 2010, the Land Trust began a three-year project to control invasive species and restore native species.  Through this effort:
  • Thousands of oak and walnut trees will be saved from being overtaken by aggressive invasive species
  • Invasive reed canary grass is being replaced with native sedges in the emergent wetland
  • Canada thistle and other invasive species are being controlled in the prairie
