BURR OAK BEND

Central Indiana Land Trust's second largest property is Burr Oak Bend, a 130-acre site in Hamilton County.

Central Indiana Land Trust acquired the first phase of Burr Oak Bend in August 2002. This 52-acre parcel was the first land acquisition to close as a result of the White River/Guide Settlement following the fish kill of December 1999. The site is a floodplain in a bend of the White River, and has been restored from an agricultural field to 31.5 acres of mixed hardwood forest and 12.5 acres of prairie.

In 2004, Central Indiana Land Trust acquired an additional 68 acres of land in 3 different tracts to bring the total acreage of Burr Oak Bend to 120 acres. This area includes an extensive intact forested riparian corridor along a high quality stretch of the White River. Another 8 acres were acquired north of the north east parcel in 2005, and an inholding of 2 acres was acquired in 2009. The Land Trust has been and will continue to conduct restoration work on most of this property, including prairie, forest, and wetland enhancements.

There is a half-mile loop path on the south east parcel, leading back to the wetland area.  It is accessible by a small gravel parking pull-off on the south side of 206th Street, east of the river.  There is also a small gravel parking area and an interpretive sign displayed on the south west parcel, located on Riverwood Avenue south of 206th Street. Additionally, there is a parking area and canoe launch located on Riverwood Avenue north of 206th Street.
